ACFCU Receives Statewide Financial Education Award

Appalachian Community Federal Credit Union (ACFCU) has received the Desjardins Youth Financial Education Award from the Tennessee Credit Union League for its Camp Appy program, which introduces children to the fundamentals of money management through fun, hands-on learning experiences.

The award was presented at the 2026 Tennessee Credit Union League Annual Meeting held in Gatlinburg in September, where ACFCU Marketing Manager Hannah Hutchins accepted the honor.

Hutchins created Camp Appy to help children build a strong financial foundation at an early age. Designed for children ages 10 and younger, the program makes learning about money engaging and accessible through interactive activities that introduce concepts such as earning, spending, saving and making thoughtful financial decisions.

“We are incredibly proud of Hannah and the heart, creativity and hard work she has poured into Camp Appy,” said Miranda Gray Cooper, Chief Experience Officer at ACFCU. “She took an idea and turned it into a meaningful program that gives children a chance to learn about money in a way they can understand and enjoy. Seeing Camp Appy receive this recognition, along with the other honors it has earned, is exciting for our entire credit union. Hannah has created something special, and we are proud of the impact it is making.”

Camp Appy reflects ACFCU’s commitment to helping young people develop the knowledge and confidence to make informed financial decisions. Through hands-on activities and community partnerships, the program brings financial education to life in a way that goes beyond the classroom.

The Desjardins Financial Education Awards recognize credit unions for their leadership and commitment to financial education for youth and adults. Named in honor of Alphonse Desjardins, a pioneer of the credit union movement, the awards celebrate efforts to improve financial knowledge and strengthen the financial well-being of individuals and families.

Camp Appy has also earned recognition through the credit union industry's Diamond Awards, further highlighting the creativity and value of the program.

“Financial education is one of the most important ways we can invest in the next generation,” Hutchins said. “We want children to know that learning about money doesn't have to be intimidating. It can be practical, fun and something they carry with them for years to come. That's exactly what Camp Appy is designed to do.”
